Harabuji's Journey
Harabuji’s Journey follows the gripping story of Tong, a young boy who narrowly escapes the U.S. firebombings of Tokyo during WWII and flees to Seoul, Korea. There, he is confronted with a shocking truth: he is a Chosenjin—a derogatory term used by the Japanese for Koreans, denoting “savage.” Unable to speak Korean, Tong faces the challenge of discovering what it means to be Korean in a newly independent country he hardly knows. Years later, as the Korean War erupts, Tong witnesses the horrors of war firsthand. He narrowly escapes the North Korean People’s Army, who round up boys for battle. A North Korean himself, Tong goes into hiding to avoid capture by the Communists. Seized by the Nationalists and thrust onto the frontlines with British troops, he becomes known as “Tom”—the only Korean able to communicate with the English-speaking troops. Harabuji’s Journey portrays the devastation of war through the eyes of a boy, shedding light on the complexities of identity and the unbreakable spirit of hope and determination amidst destruction and chaos.
